Tim's Takeaways: Week 4

RBs aren't dead!

After a bizarre start for first-round RBs, we finally got some vintage performances. It was a huge week for the RB position.

Nine of the top-20 scoring players on Sunday (excluding QBs) were RBs. Nine RBs rushed for over 100 yards, eleven scored over 20 PPR points. Christian Mccaffery and Austin Ekeler are back inside the top-five.

  Nature is healing.

Russell Wilson & Tom Brady: Still good at football

Speaking of nature healing… It took long enough but Russell Wilson and Tom Brady turned in signature performances in week four, finishing as QB3 & QB4 respectively.

Both accounted for at least three total TDs and 25+ fantasy points. Surprisingly, both lost their game in real-life. Luckily for us, we don’t lose fantasy points for that!

They may have let their fans down, but they certainly are back in the good graces of their fantasy managers.

Holy Hockenson

I will get my shameless brag out of the way now. I had Hockenson as TE ‘start of the week’ this week. Even so, I certainly didn’t expect him to be the highest scoring player in all of week four.

The crazy thing about his eight-catch 179-yard two-TD performance? It could’ve been even better.  He actually got tackled at the one-yard line, otherwise he would have finished with three TDs and 46.0 fantasy points. That’s nearly twice the amount of points Kyle Pitts has this whole season.

Hockenson was a focal point this week thanks to the absence of D’andre Swift and Amon-Ra St. Brown. I’m not necessarily recommending you trade him, but his value may never be higher than it is right now. You can continue to start him and hope he stays hot, or you can move him now and probably get a massive haul.

Tim's Takeaways: Week 3

The Plight of RBs Continue
Another week, another failure by first-round RBs to return a proportionate amount of points relative to their draft position. In a week where Jonathan Taylor, Christian Mccaffery, Austin Ekeler, Dalvin Cook, D’Andre Swift, Alvin Kamara, and Najee Harris all failed to reach 14 PPR points, the question burns brighter than ever: Is the era of the first-round RB over?

I mean, you know it’s bad when Tyler Conklin (16.4 PPR points) outscores your first-round pick.

Of the top-fifteen highest scoring RBs of week three, just one (Derrick Henry) had a sub-round two ADP. To put things into perspective, there were 33 WRs in week three that scored higher than 14.0 PPR points.

My advice? Hold the line. Correction/positive regression is on the way. It just has to be. Otherwise this season would be a major statistical outlier and well… I don’t know about you, but now that I say it out loud, it sounds exactly like my luck.

Do The Bucs Suck?
Regardless of who’s fault Tampa’s struggles are, their output in fantasy and on the field has been unacceptable. Through three games the Bucs have a total of three offensive TDs.

God forbid Tom Brady doesn’t have the most elite stable of weapons in all of football…

Although their production has been concerning (Brady’s in particular) his lack of dependable weapons can’t be understated. Gronk is gone, we knew Chris Godwin was going to be an injury concern Julio Jones has become fragile in his old age, Evans served a one-game suspension… None of that however is an excuse when you’re the GOAT. If you and I know that, best believe Brady knows that.

Yes things look bad, but I think once Godwin gets back and if Julio can stay healthy enough, Tampa could get back on track sooner rather than later. As a proud Leonard Fournette manager in several leagues, I certainly hope so.

Jags No Longer The Matchup To Pick On
Normally you see your D/ST has an upcoming matchup with Jacksonville and your mouth starts to water. Well, following this years theme of things being completely backward, we’re now going to start running the other way when we see the Jags on the schedule.

Between Christian Kirk’s breakout, James Robinson’s inevitability, Travis Etienne’s high-floor, and Trevor Lawrence taking the next step, Duval county is no longer a squad to be sneezed at.

Lawrence looked like a legit NFL pro in week three, nearly throwing for four TDs (one called back.. Evan Engrams fault) with no turnovers against a Chargers defense that isn’t exactly a pushover unit. Who knew a Super-Bowl winning head coach could make such a difference?

Tim's Takeaways: Week 2

10/6/2022

Amon Ra WR1 szn

After a monstrous performance in week two (nine rec. 119 yards, two TDs, 68 rushing yards, 39.4 fantasy points) Amon-Ra St. Brown joined elite company becoming the third player in NFL history with eight consecutive games of 8+ catches.

The other two? Michael Thomas and Antonio Brown. Not bad kid…

What’s scary is, his week two could’ve been even more monstrous had Goff not missed him in the end-zone in the first quarter. St. Brown has enjoyed a 30+ percent target share in each of the first two games of 2022, and now has six consecutive games with a TD. He is firmly locked in as a weekly WR1 until further notice.

Wentz QB1 szn?

Wentz has 27 points in back-to-back weeks, 600+ yards and seven TDs currently sitting at QB3 overall. Lets keep in mind he played the Jags and Lions weeks one and two, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we shouldn’t take anything away from him.

Wentz has possibly the most loaded stable of weapons he’s ever had between Terry McLaurin, Curtis Samuel, Jahan Dotson, Antonio Gibson, Logan Thomas and JD McKissic. It’s not a stretch to say someone will eat every week. They pretty much all have already.

It won’t always be pretty, but if you like fantasy points and you’re someone who drafted Dak Prescott, Joe Burrow, Trey Lance or Tom Brady, you have to admit he’s at least worth consideration.

Is the RB position dead?

Out of the top-20 fantasy scorers on Sunday, only two were RBs. To make matters worse, those two were second-round RBs (Nick Chubb, Aaron Jones). After all the preaching I’ve done about the importance of the RB position in the first round… Could it be that I was wrong?

Well, I never have been before…

But I suppose anything is possible. There’s still time for me to be right. But through two games, Cooper Kupp, Tyreek Hill, Stefon Diggs, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jaylen Waddle have outscored the next closest first-round RB (according to ADP) by nearly 30 points.

After the Jonathan Taylor dud on Sunday, there are currently two first-round RBs averaging more than 15 points per game. Could we be witnessing the death of the RB position? Could we be transitioning into the era of the first-round WR? Stay tuned.
